World-Class Fishing on Lake Conroe

World-Class Fishing on Lake Conroe

Cast a line into Lake Conroe and you're fishing water that has humbled touring pros. Twenty-one thousand acres of bass, catfish, crappie, and hybrid stripers sit right off the piers at Sunset Shores RV Park — and the big ones are out there waiting.

Twenty-one miles long and up to six wide, Lake Conroe is a genuine big-fish factory. The lower lake is a maze of open water, boat docks, and bulkheads; the upper end runs into the standing timber and water willow at the edge of the Sam Houston National Forest. Add the man-made habitat reefs sunk by Texas Parks & Wildlife and a forage base of shad thick enough to grow trophies, and you've got structure the fish simply can't resist.

What's biting

Largemouth bass are the headline act, and Conroe grows giants — the lake record is a 15.93-pounder. Work the marinas, docks, and grass lines with shad imitations or soft plastics in early spring and fall and hang on.

Channel catfish are the most abundant sportfish in the lake and bite year-round on cut shad — perfect for a lazy afternoon off the pier. Hybrid stripers give you an open-water brawl on trolled or jigged spoons, crappie stack up on the submerged timber and bridge pilings each spring, and the bluegill run genuinely big.

A lake the pros respect

This isn't just a local honey hole. Lake Conroe hosted the 2017 Bassmaster Classic and has been a regular stop on the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour, where winning bags routinely push into the high-20-pound range — it hosted Stage 1 of the tour again in early 2025. And every March, the Big Bass Tour packs Papa's on the Lake with weekend anglers chasing five-figure payouts.

Your home base at Sunset Shores

Here's the best part: at Sunset Shores RV Park you don't fight boat-ramp traffic or a long tow home. Walk out on the park's piers and start casting, or drop your boat and be on open water in minutes. Fish first light, come back for lunch, and head out again for the evening bite — all from your own waterfront site. Whether you're chasing a personal best or a tournament limit, this is the home base that puts you on the fish.
