Swimming on Lake Conroe

Swimming on Lake Conroe

On a hot Texas afternoon, nothing beats sliding into cool water. Lake Conroe serves up everything from family beach days to elite open-water racing — and at Sunset Shores RV Park, the swim is right outside your door.

You don't need a boat to enjoy Conroe's water. The lake's clean, wide-open water makes it a natural for swimmers of every stripe — from kids splashing in the shallows to athletes logging serious distance.

Where champions train

Conroe's open water draws real competition. Every November the Oilman Texas Triathlon pulls up to 1,000 athletes to Margaritaville Lake Resort, with a grueling 1.2-mile half-iron swim and a friendlier 500-meter sprint. The wider Montgomery County area is triathlon country — a training ground for the IRONMAN Texas community and anyone chasing a finish line.

Beaches open to everyone

For a classic swim day, Scott's Ridge Swim Area — just a couple of miles up the road from Sunset Shores, off FM 1097 in the Sam Houston National Forest — offers a designated swim beach, picnic shelters with grills, and restrooms, open April through September. Lake Conroe Park over on Highway 105 adds another 22 acres of swim areas, BBQ pits, and fishing piers.

The best swim is at home

But the easiest water to reach is the water at Sunset Shores RV Park. Wade in from your own white-sand beach, let the little ones splash in the wading pool, or cool off in the gated swimming pool and spa reserved just for residents. Lake in the morning, pool in the afternoon, sunset from the sand — that's a summer day done right.
